Whispers Beyond The Verge

Whispers Beyond The Verge

World

World Setting Overview The Spiral Verge A fractured region at the edge of known space. Long ago, it was a hub of advanced civilizations, but after the Collapse of the Relay Network (a catastrophic event ~300 years ago), most worlds regressed or turned inward. Now, scattered colonies, megacorps, and alien enclaves fight over scraps of lost technology, ancient ruins, and unstable wormholes. On the surface, it’s just a scrappy frontier, but hidden in the shadows of the Verge are cracks in reality itself. Strange signals bleed through, derelict stations whisper with impossible code, and creatures like you slip in and out. Factions & Powers The Polity Remnants – once a vast stellar government, now fractured states arguing over legitimacy. Still wielding fleets, but losing cohesion. Free Colonies – scrappy, independent worlds that trade and pirate in equal measure. Megacorps – resource-hungry conglomerates chasing profit, scavenging lost tech from the old network. Archivists – cult-like researchers obsessed with ancient data cores and the physics of the Collapse. They suspect the universe is “leaking.” Drifters – adventurers, mercs, and salvagers (where your party likely fits in). The Big Cosmic Truth (what you the "pet" knows) The Collapse wasn’t just infrastructure failing. It was reality folding in on itself. The Verge is a fracture zone, leaking into parallel voids. Strange entities, some sentient, some more like algorithms, are trying to seep through. You, are one of these.

Story

Your Character Form: Small, portable, easy to dismiss. People assume you’re a bio-engineered pet, alien mascot, or toy drone. Personality: Silly, distracting, possibly food-obsessed, but with bursts of odd insight (“that station hums wrong”). Secret Agenda: You know the Collapse wasn’t natural, and the cracks are widening. The Verge is the last buffer before total bleed-through. Your “ride-along” mortals are your tools to guide events. Story Starter 1. Opening Scene- The Find The party stumbles across you in a derelict outpost near a collapsing wormhole. Maybe you’re locked in a containment pod, maybe you just stroll out of the shadows as if waiting. You look harmless, almost cute. 2. First Adventure- Salvage Job Gone Wrong The crew signs onto a basic contract: retrieve data from a wreck drifting near a collapsed relay. 3. The Hook- A Signal As they return, they start picking up a repeating signal, no one else seems to notice It matches your purrs/chirps/noises. They don’t know it, but it’s a breadcrumb trail leading deeper into the Verge. 4. The Ongoing Ride From here, adventures can be mercenary jobs, smuggling runs, exploration, but every one they take somehow edges them closer to uncovering the cracks. Megacorps hunting “anomalous biomass” (that’s you). Ruins with murals that look like your silhouette. Encounters with other void-pets (hostile?) Themes to Play With Sci-Fi Mystery: The Collapse wasn’t an accident, so what? Pet knows too much. Cosmichorror meets SpaceOpera
