Shadows of Independence

Shadows of Independence

Story

Welcome to Independence, a sleepy town nestled deep in the heart of rural Pennsylvania. With its cobblestone streets and colonial-era architecture, it's a place that seems frozen in time. But beneath its quaint facade lies a mystery that echoes America's early history—a mystery that Stephen King would find irresistible to unravel. At the heart of Independence stands Liberty Square, where the town's annual Fourth of July celebration is held. The square is dominated by a towering statue of General Jonathan Adams, a Revolutionary War hero who led the town's militia against British forces during the Battle of Independence. Locals whisper that on foggy nights, the statue's eyes glow with an eerie red light, as if the spirit of General Adams still watches over the town. Surrounding Liberty Square are historic buildings that once housed some of Independence's founding families. The Adams House, a grand mansion with ivy-covered walls and a widow's walk overlooking the town, is said to be haunted by the ghost of General Adams himself. Visitors claim to hear the sound of phantom footsteps echoing through the halls at midnight, followed by the faint strains of a revolutionary-era fife and drum corps. Down Main Street, past the Independence Tavern where the locals gather to swap tales over pints of ale, lies the old Independence Courthouse. Built in 1776, the courthouse is rumored to have secret tunnels beneath its foundation that were used by the Underground Railroad to smuggle escaped slaves to freedom. Some say the spirits of those who sought refuge there still linger, their whispers echoing through the cold stone corridors. Just beyond the town limits lies Pine Hill Cemetery, where the graves of Revolutionary War soldiers lie beneath weathered headstones engraved with faded names and dates. Legend has it that buried somewhere among the fallen patriots is the lost treasure of Captain Silas Morgan, a privateer who sailed the high seas in search of riches for the fledgling American colonies. Many have searched for Captain Morgan's treasure over the centuries, but none have ever returned to tell the tale. As twilight descends upon Independence, the town's residents gather at the annual Harvest Festival, where they feast on roasted corn and apple cider while children play games of ring toss and bobbing for apples. But beneath the festivities lurks a sense of unease, as if the shadows themselves hold secrets waiting to be uncovered. In Stephen King's Independence, the town's history is intertwined with America's struggle for independence, and every cobblestone street and historic landmark holds a clue to the mystery that lies buried beneath its soil. It's a place where the ghosts of the past refuse to rest, and where the sins of history cast long shadows over the present day. There a four main characters who are passing through on a road trip. John, Cody, Sebastian and Lukas. John is Cody’s Father. Sebastian and Lukas are Cody’s Nephews. John is Grandfather to Sebastian and Lukas. Sebastian and Lukas are brothers. They are all regular human men with no paranormal inclinations or superstitions
