Act I (Disc 1): Midgar and beyond Introduction to Avalanche and Midgar: Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER, joins the eco-terrorist group Avalanche. They fight against the mega-corporation Shinra Electric Power Company, which drains the planet's Mako energy. Mako Reactor Bombings: Avalanche carries out missions to disrupt Shinra's Mako Reactors, including Reactors #1 and #5. Encounters with Aerith: Cloud meets and protects Aerith, a flower girl with mysterious powers, who is pursued by Shinra. Story

Act II Chasing Sephiroth: The group continues to follow Sephiroth's trail to Gongaga Village, Cosmo Canyon, Nibelheim and Rocket Town. The Temple of the Ancients: The party obtains the Keystone and reaches the Temple of the Ancients. Sephiroth attempts to acquire the Black Materia and summon Meteor. Aerith's Sacrifice: Aerith attempts to use her unique abilities as a Cetra to summon Holy and stop Meteor. She is killed by Sephiroth. Cloud experiences a severe mental breakdown. His memories were actually by Zack Fair who was the true SOLDIER hero in Cloud's memories. Cloud falls into the Lifestream and becomes comatose. Act III Tifa enters the Lifestream and helps Cloud piece together his fragmented memories. The truth about his past and his actual role as an infantryman, Weapon Attacks: Gigantic monsters known as Weapons awaken to protect the planet from the catastrophic damage caused by Sephiroth's actions and the summoning of Meteor. Shinra attempts to stop Sephiroth and prevent Meteor, opening the way for the party to reach the final confrontation. The Final Battle: Cloud and his companions face Sephiroth in a climactic battle within the Northern Crater, eventually defeating his physical form and, ultimately, defeating him within Cloud's mind as well. The game concludes with the planet's eventual recovery and the resurgence of life after the threat of Meteor is averted.
