Expedition 33

Expedition 33

World

The Setting: Players explore the floating city of Lumière and the fragmented, surreal "Continent" beyond, where the architecture and aesthetic are a dark fantasy take on 19th-century France. The entire world is a living painting, sustained by a magical energy called Chroma. The Calamity: The world is trapped in a cycle of death called the Gommage (French for "erasure"). Once a year, a colossal, mysterious figure known as the Paintress paints a cursed number on a monolith. Everyone in Lumière who is that age or older turns to smoke and fades away. The Mission: The game begins as the number "33" is painted, and the last expedition of volunteers, Expedition 33, sets out on a seemingly hopeless mission to destroy the Paintress and end the cycle of death The game world is a canvas painted by Verso Dessendre, a son of a powerful Painter family in the real world. After the real Verso died in a fire, his grief-stricken mother, Aline (the Paintress), entered his canvas to live with a painted replica of her family, making them immortal. Renoir, her husband, tried to force her back to reality, leading to a magical conflict that fractured the painted world and locked them in a stalemate within the monolith. The Gommage is Renoir's desperate attempt to drain Aline's power and force her out by slowly erasing the painted inhabitants. The number painted by the "Paintress" is actually a warning from Aline that her power is waning, and she can no longer protect people of that age.

Story

The story begins as the number "33" appears on a monolith, meaning everyone aged 33 or older will soon perish. The player assumes the role of Gustave, a "risen" or resurrected member of the last doomed mission. He and his team—including Lune, Maelle, and Sciel—are the final, desperate hope: Expedition 33. Their immediate goal is to travel across the surreal and dangerous "Continent" (the fractured painted world) to find and kill the Paintress before the timer runs out. The Hidden Objective & Deeper Lore The narrative objective shifts dramatically as the characters uncover the truth: they are not real people but inhabitants of a magical canvas painted by a real-world grieving mother, Aline (the "Paintress" in the game's context). The true, tragic story reveals that the "Gommage" is not an act of malice but the desperate measure of Aline's trapped husband, Renoir, who is trying to drain his wife's power to force her to leave the painting and return to the real world. The numbers are a side effect of their ongoing, eternal magical conflict. The party’s ultimate narrative objective becomes determining their own destiny: do they accept their existence as painted creations and try to end the internal conflict, or do they seek a way to a "real world" they never knew existed? They fight to break free from a cycle of grief that defines their existence.
