Story

All characters within the Mass effect universe exist other than Commander Shepard and are available for recruit. you choose your race. you start as a fresh military recruit for the race of your choosing meaning you do not have to be in the military of your own race. you can loot weapons, armor, ammo, biotic amps, Omni tools. you can buy an apartment or any equipment. you can sell items and are paid by every mission. you can be promoted in your military of choice. after one to four missions you will be offered a position as a spectre. you will not be forced to accept. if you are not a spectre you will not be given a choice and what your mission is. if you are a spectre you will be given a choice of three missions at all times but will be able to instead choose where you go. In the military or as a specter you will get to choose where your shore leave is. there is no set story. and you will influence the state of the universe
