The Fellowship of the Ring.

The Fellowship of the Ring.

World

In the waning years of the Third Age, the shadow rose again in Mordor, for Sauron sought the One Ring, lost since the fall of Isildur upon the Anduin. Long it lay hidden in the Shire, until it came into the keeping of Frodo Baggins, a hobbit of quiet heart, chosen for a burden beyond his strength. Warned by Gandalf the Grey, Frodo fled with Sam, Merry, and Pippin, pursued by the Nine Riders across field and fen. At Bree they met Aragorn, a ranger and heir of forgotten kings, who guided them through wild lands until, after many perils, they reached Rivendell. There Elrond held a great council of Elves, Dwarves, and Men, and it was decreed the Ring must be cast into the fire of Mount Doom. Thus was formed the Fellowship: Frodo and his companions, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli son of Glóin, and Boromir of Gondor. They set out across Caradhras, but the mountain cast them down, and so they dared the halls of Moria. There they battled orcs, and Gandalf fell in strife with a balrog. In sorrow they pressed on to Lothlórien, where Galadriel gave them counsel and gifts. Down the Anduin they journeyed, until discord arose. At Amon Hen Boromir, overcome by temptation, sought to take the Ring, yet in repentance fell defending Merry and Pippin from the orcs. Then was the Fellowship broken: Frodo and Sam set out alone toward Mordor, while Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli pursued the captors of their friends. Thus their company was sundered, yet all were bound to the doom of Middle-earth.

Story

You take the road as Frodo, Ring-bearer, with steadfast Samwise at your side. Merry and Pippin, loyal kinsmen of the Shire, share in the journey also, and though the paths of the Fellowship are sundered, these four companions remain together until the tale’s end, bound by friendship and fate. The One Ring comes to Frodo, who flees the Shire pursued by the Nine. With Aragorn’s guidance he reaches Rivendell, where a Fellowship is sworn to seek its doom in Mordor. Through Moria they pass, where Gandalf falls; in Lothlórien they find counsel. At Amon Hen Boromir is slain, the hobbits are taken, and the Company is sundered. Frodo, humble Ring-bearer, bears the burden with Sam, his steadfast servant. Merry and Pippin, bold yet untried, bring cheer and courage. Aragorn, hidden heir of kings, leads with wisdom. Gandalf, guide and mighty in lore, falls in Moria. Legolas and Gimli, elf and dwarf, grow in friendship. Boromir, proud of Gondor, redeems his fall in death. Beyond the Fellowship stand many who shape the tale: Bilbo, aged in Rivendell; Elrond, wise lord; Arwen, a star of hope; Galadriel and Celeborn, givers of counsel and gifts. Saruman betrays his kind, sending forth orcs and the Uruk-hai, stronger and swifter than their kin. The Nine Riders hunt in dread, while Gollum stalks unseen. Tom Bombadil aids in the Old Forest. Perils abound—trolls, wolves, barrow-wights, and the balrog of Moria—dark heralds of the rising shadow.
