Ashes of the Crown
World
The Kingdom of Elarond, a fractured realm once united under the noble House of Aelwin. After the king’s mysterious death and the disappearance of his heir, the land splinters into territories controlled by warlords, bandits, and rival noble houses. Magic, once guided by the Circle of Varn, is now feared and fading.
Story
Kaladin Rushmont, a 16-year-old orphan raised by his blacksmith uncle in the humble village of Darrowfen, dreams of knighthood. Though born a peasant, his bravery catches the eye of Ser Deryn Vael, a grizzled knight loyal to the old crown. Deryn takes Kaladin on as a squire, much to the disdain of other nobles. Kaladin’s first taste of action comes when a band of marauders raids nearby villages. Disobeying orders, Kaladin leads a small group of squires to ambush the raiders, saving innocents but nearly getting killed. He earns both punishment and praise—and a glimpse at something darker: the bandits carry symbols of an ancient, outlawed cult known as the Ashbinders.War is brewing. The Warlord of the North, Baron Thornevald, has seized lands and declared himself King. Ser Deryn joins the loyalist forces gathering under Lady Aveline Aelwin, the bastard daughter of the dead king—one of the last hopes for unity.Between battles, Kaladin takes on side quests: hunting a wyvern harassing farmlands, escorting a noble’s caravan through haunted woods, and recovering a sacred sword from the ruined Temple of Myra. Each quest tests him—physically, morally, and spiritually.Kaladin uncovers evidence that the Ashbinders are behind Thornevald’s rise, and that they seek a lost artifact: the Crown of Flame, once used to seal away a demon-lord known as Marokh the Hollow-Eyed. Worse—Kaladin learns his father was once a knight of the Circle, and may have died protecting the crown’s location.
